MO: ‘Cyber attack’ hits Reeds Spring schools. Data breach includes Social Security numbers

The Reeds Spring school district has notified employees and families that it was the “victim of a sophisticated cyber attack” that involved the unauthorized access — and acquisition — of district and personal data.

They were told that names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, health insurance information and even class lists may have been obtained.

Reeds Spring, Missouri – October 19, 2023 –

Reeds Spring R-IV School District Notice of Data Security Incident:

The privacy and security of the personal information we maintain is of the utmost importance to Reeds Spring RIV School District (“Reeds Spring Schools”). We are writing with important information regarding a recent data security incident that involved personal information. We want to provide information about the incident and let you know that we continue to take significant measures to protect information in our possession.

On May 18, 2023, Reeds Spring Schools detected unauthorized access to our network. Upon learning of this issue, we contained the threat and immediately commenced a prompt and thorough investigation with external cybersecurity professionals experienced in handling these types of incidents. After an extensive forensic investigation and manual document review, we discovered on September 28, 2023 that between April 26, 2023 and May 18, 2023, certain files containing personal information may have been accessed and potentially acquired by an unauthorized individual(s).

The potentially impacted contained full names, addresses, medical information, health insurance information, driver’s license or government identification card numbers, Social Security numbers and education information. Impacted elements of information varied per individual.

Please accept our apologies that this incident occurred. We remain fully committed to maintaining the privacy of personal information in our possession and have taken many precautions to safeguard it. We continually evaluate and modify our practices to enhance the security and privacy of personal information.

For individuals who have questions or need additional information regarding this incident, or to determine if they are impacted and are eligible for credit monitoring, Reeds Spring Schools has established a dedicated toll-free response line at 1-833-965-2332. This response line is staffed with professionals familiar with this incident and knowledgeable on what you can do to protect against misuse of your information. The response line is available Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM Eastern, excluding holidays.
