Cyber incident shuts down Otsego Memorial Hospital computers

Posted on November 13, 2023 by Dissent

Mardi Link reports:

Munson Healthcare officials are investigating a cyber incident at Otsego Memorial Hospital in Gaylord, that in October prompted a shutdown of the hospital’s computer system.

Munson Healthcare acquired Otsego Memorial in 2018 and a Munson spokesperson said the shutdown was limited to Gaylord only, and officials have no reason to believe patient data was compromised.

Here we go again with the “no reason to believe…” claim instead of saying “We don’t know yet, so to be on the safe side, we recommend you….”

And in another major no-no, the news article states:

Specifics of these attacks are rarely shared with the public as healthcare providers say they are bound by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act — known as HIPAA — not to share protected patient information.

Who on earth told the reporter THAT?  It’s simply not true at all.

We really really really need mandated disclosure that requires certain elements while flat-out prohibiting some kinds of claims or deceptive statements.

Read more at MDJ, but keep in mind that the reporter seems to have been given some misinformation or misleading statements.
