Is a new ransomware group’s listing for Decatur Independent School District linked to an attack in September?

Posted on November 15, 2023 by Dissent

Decatur Independent School District in Texas was added to Inc Ransomware’s leak site on Wednesday.  There is no summary or description of what the threat actors claim to have done or acquired. There is no countdown clock or timer, and there is no indication of how much money is being demanded.

There is a proofpack. A number of the files in the small proofpack are public records that do not prove access to anything that was protected or non-public, but some files had students’ names and limited information on them. Some of those files said “Skyward Educator Access Plus” at the top of the page.

There was nothing to indicate employee data was involved in this incident. Perhaps the threat actors have shared that information with the district.

There is nothing on the district’s website to indicate anything amiss.

At this point, then, there is very little information that has been revealed publicly. On September 8, however, DataBreaches had noted reporting by The Messenger that Decatur suspected a cybersecurity attack was responsible for the internet and phone outage experienced earlier that week:

DISD’s main server went down at 5:15 a.m. Tuesday. Since then, district officials have met with various experts to look into the cause of the issue. On Friday, DISD Director of Communications Robyn Jones released a statement indicating the investigation has pointed to a “cybersecurity incident.”

At that time, the district had not received any ransom demands. Have they since? Is Inc Ransomware’s listing related to the report in early September or is it an unrelated incident?

DataBreaches will update this post if more information becomes available.
