On June 6, an individual calling themself “Satanic,” listed data for sale that was allegedly from the Los Angeles Unified School District. The listing, seeking $5,000.00 claimed to include 24 million student records and additional records from employees.
At the time, DataBreaches did not post anything about the listing because inspection of the sample data raised the possibility that the data were not from a new breach, but might be from the Vice Society ransomware attack on the district in 2022. At the time, LAUSD did not pay the threat actors’ ransom demands and Vice Society leaked the data on their dark website.
DataBreaches reached out to “Satanic” at the Telegram account provided on their listing and asked whether the data were from the Vice Society attack or were from a new incident. Satanic said they never heard of the Vice Society attack, but when asked to provide proof that this was a new incident by showing DataBreaches data created after 2022, all Satanic did was mention that anticipated graduation dates after 2022 were in the data. Of course, those dates would have been in any data stolen in 2022 for students already enrolled in the district.
Satanic never produced the proof DataBreaches requested.
But now we learn that the LAUSD has confirmed that they had a breach involving a vendor — Edgenuity — who used Snowflake (But see update for Edgenuity’s denial). State Scoop reports:
A spokesperson for the district told Bloomberg on Monday that it believes a malicious actor targeted the school with the intent to sell student and employee data. A district spokesperson told StateScoop that “one or more” district vendors had its data compromised, but did not name them.
So, what data did Edgenuity store for the district? Is it the same data that Vice Society stole in 2022, or does it include more current data as well?
Yesterday, Satanic re-listed the data on the forum, but this time, it was not for sale. It was leaked for 8 tokens/credits. The listing does not make any mention of it being acquired from any vendor.
Update: “An Edgenuity spokesperson told Protos, “Edgenuity is not aware of any data or information that has been stolen or leaked as a result of any hacking activity of LAUSD.”
