Infosys McCamish Systems (“IMS”) in Atlanta provides software and services to the life insurance industry. In October 2023, it was the victim of a ransomware attack that affected 6,078,263 people.
As they explain in a notification to the Maine Attorney General’s Office, they were providing notification on their own behalf as a data owner and on behalf of impacted organizations that requested they provide notification on their behalf as a data collector/third-party agent.
Oceanview Life and Annuity Company requested that IMS notify Maine on their behalf. In February, IMS notified the California Attorney General’s Office on behalf of Bank of America. As Bleeping Computer reported, 57,000 bank customers were affected.
What Happened?
On November 2, 2023, IMS became aware that certain IMS systems were encrypted by ransomware. A forensic investigation subsequently determined that unauthorized activity occurred between October 29, 2023, and November 2, 2023. LockBit3.0 quickly claimed responsibility for the attack and claimed to have locked 2,000 computers. When IMS allegedly only offered them $50,000, LockBit posted about the attack.
In their submission to Maine on June 27, IMS reported that it has notified its impacted organizations of the incident and of the compromise of any personal information pertaining to them.
The types of information impacted varied by individual but reportedly included some or all of the following: Social Security
Number, date of birth, medical treatment/record information, biometric data, email address and password, username and password, Driver’s License number or state ID number, financial account information, payment card information, passport number, tribal ID number, and U.S. military ID number.
The number of people who may have had protected health information or medical/health information involved was not separately reported. DataBreaches could not find any report to HHS by IMS as of publication.
