Shame on Interserver.net.
On July 10, DataBreaches notified hostdepartment.com by email that an IP address was exposing hundreds of data leaks/dumps that had been caught up in hacking or ransomware incidents.
When they didn’t respond, I called them the next day. They asked me to resubmit the abuse alert to interserver.net. I promptly did that and provided follow-up information on July 11 as soon as they requested it. Interserver.net was told that these files were from illegal attacks on victim entities and included sensitive patient information.
Interserver’s policy says they resolve reports in 24-48 hours. They did not. On July 13, they sent an email to say a follow-up had already been conducted and that I would be notified of the outcome. They marked the priority of the complaint as “standard.”
It is now July 17 and the data are all still exposed. There has been no further update from Interserver.net.
I do not know if this IP is used as storage for threat actors or is a collection by a researcher or intel firm or what. All I know is that stolen and sensitive data is exposed from hundreds of victim entities and interserver.net has not either removed it all or made their customer lock it down.
Does anyone know anyone at interserver.net who can get them to be more responsible about this issue?
Update: I have since found out that the IP address is in the hands of ne’er-do-wells who are trying to re-sell previously stolen and leaked data. Interserver should immediately delete all the data and cancel the account for TOS violation. But they haven’t. I have now sent them an update and a demand for immediate removal of the stolen data. I have also notified the FBI of the IP address and of Interserver.net’s failure to remove the data promptly.
inter-server is a company that responds fast, you can address your issue to Mr. John or Mike
Thanks, but maybe if you know the people, you should point them to this post. Yesterday I received an email from the company saying that all they had from me was a complaint about an IP address with no additional information. I had sent them all the additional information on July 11 in response to their request. I re-sent it yet again yesterday. At least three people in their abuse department have now been made aware of the issue and sensitivity. The firm is either incompetent or it is more concerned about taking money from customers than doing the right thing.
