Thousands of Vastaamo leak victims seek higher compensation

Posted on September 15, 2024 by Dissent

YLE reports:

Two lawyers representing some victims of the massive Vastaamo psychotherapy centre data breach say their clients are dissatisfied with the compensation amounts announced by the State Treasury.

In late August, Treasury service director Tuomo Yliluoma estimated to Yle that Vastaamo’s victims will receive an average of 500–1,500 euros in damages for attempted or aggravated extortion.

The unprecedented case involves over 22,000 victims, the highest number ever in a Finnish criminal case.

In April, the 26-year-old was sentenced to six years in prison, but will likely be released in less than two years. He is appealing the sentence.

Comment: DataBreaches has followed the incident since it was first disclosed, and agrees that the proposed damages payment is way too low for the type of harm done to the Vastaamo patients. DataBreaches also thinks it is a shame if Aleksanteri Kivimäki (aka ‘zeekill’) gets treated as a first-time offender even though he had other convictions. Is there any indication that he is truly remorseful for what he did? Will he spend years of his life trying to make restitution and compensation to his victims? Or will he just be out of prison in less than two more years and just out on parole for the remainder of his sentence?
