No need to hack when it’s leaking: Cisco edition

Posted on December 18, 2024 by Dissent

The hacker and forum owner known as “IntelBroker” announced that he and others breached Cisco systems and obtained source code and other valuable information. In a forum post where they offered “partial Cisco” data, they admit that a Cisco error had enabled them to access the data:

In October 2024, Cisco accidentally left open their DevHub instance, which allowed @zjj, @IntelBroker and @EnergyWeaponUser to download the entire 4.5TB contents of their system.
This download only contains the following:
Cisco C9800-SW-iosxe-wlc.16.11.01
Cisco IOS XE & XR
Cisco ISE
Cisco SASE
Cisco Umbrella
Cisco Webex
Total file size is 2.9GB

As Security Week reports, Cisco’s investigation confirmed that its systems had not been breached and that the data was actually obtained from a public-facing DevHub environment.

The networking giant noted that while a majority of the data hosted in the DevHub environment was public, the hackers also obtained some files that were not intended for public download and were inadvertently published on the site due to a configuration error. The downloaded data included files related to some CX Professional Services customers.
