Zaporizhzhia Cyber Police Exposes Hacker Who Caused Millions in Losses to Victims by Mining Cryptocurrency

Posted on June 5, 2025 by Dissent

The following is a machine translation from a report in Ukrainian by the country’s national police cyber department:

A 35-year-old man hacked more than 5,000 customer accounts of a world-famous hosting company to generate cryptocurrency on the organization’s servers. The defendant faces up to 15 years in prison.

Police officers determined that a 35-year-old native of Poltava had been gathering information from open sources since 2018, identifying weaknesses in the security of various international companies, and gaining unauthorized access to their servers.

In particular, the defendant illegally gained access to over 5,000 customer accounts of an international hosting company that provides server rental services for the operation of various websites and online platforms.

After gaining access to these accounts, the attacker began to deploy unauthorized virtual machines (software that simulates the operation of a computer) using the company’s server resources.

As a result of such actions, the company suffered losses of about $4.5 million, or almost 185 million hryvnias in equivalent.
