Former Nuance Communications employee facing more charges in 2023 Geisinger data breach case

Posted on February 4, 2026 by Dissent

John Beauge reports an update to the previously reported case of a former Nuance Communications employee who compromised the protected health information of more than 1.3 million Geisinger Health patients two days after Nuance had terminated his employment for unrelated reasons.

Two counts of false statement have been added to the charge against a California man accused in the 2023 Geisinger Health System data breach case.

A superseding indictment returned Tuesday in the U.S. Middle District Court accuses Max Vance of falsely telling FBI agents in January 2024 that he had not downloaded or placed on personal devices unauthorized data.

Vance, of El Cajon, had been indicted that same month on a charge of obtaining information from a protected computer. He is detained awaiting trial on that charge.

The former Philadelphia area resident is accused of intentionally accessing without authorization and obtaining information on more than 1.3 million Geisinger patients.
