Canada’s Okanagan College warns of potential privacy breach after cyber attack

On Wednesday, CBC reported:

Nearly 16,000 students and 1,200 staff at Okanagan College are still unable to access campus network services after a cyber attack earlier this week.

In a written statement Wednesday, college president Neil Fassina said the institution’s information technology services team uncovered a cyber security attack on Monday at around 6:15 a.m. while conducting routine surveillance.

Today, the college’s website says:

IT Services continues to make progress on the current network outage.
Students and staff can login to Moodle using: https://mymoodle.okanagan.bc.ca.
For updates, view current status on the IT Services webpage.

The most recent update as of January 12 reads:

Systems Unavailable

IT Services continues to make progress on the current network outage. Students and staff can login to Moodle using: https://mymoodle.okanagan.bc.ca using their passwords.

Systems impacted:
-Internet, wireless and networks
-Internal student and staff information systems.
-Phone lines including Internet-based phones, campus security

To protect yourself from the risk of identity theft or fraud, we recommend the following:

• If you receive unusual emails or text messages in the days ahead claiming to be from Okanagan College and asking for personal information that you were not expecting, please be vigilant. Do not send personal information unless you are confident the communication is authentic.

• Never respond to any unsolicited requests for your financial information and stay aware of unauthorized transactions related to any of your accounts.
