Developing: Hospital Sisters Health System and Prevea Health hit by cyberattack

Posted on August 29, 2023 by Dissent

Yesterday, DataBreaches received a phone call from an employee at St. Vincent Hospital in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The employee was asking if we knew anything about a cyberattack on  Hospital Sisters Health System (HSHS) and stated that everything had been down for two days but the employees were not really being given information other than some assurance by the hospital that no personal information had been compromised.

When DataBreaches checked, the HSHS.org website was unreachable and phones were down.

HSHS is a non-profit healthcare system headquartered in Springfield, Illinois that has a number of hospitals:

  • St. Joseph’s Hospital in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin
  • Sacred Heart Hospital  in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, which is affiliated with the University of Wisconsin
  • St. Clare Memorial Hospital in Oconto Falls, Wisconsin
  • St. Mary’s Hospital Medical Center in Green Bay, Wisconsin
  • St. Vincent Hospital  in Green Bay, Wisconsin
  • St. Nicholas Hospital  in Sheboygan, Wisconsin
  • St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, Illinois, which is affiliated with St. John’s College and Southern Illinois University School of Medicine
  • St. Mary’s Hospital i  in Decatur, Illinois. The hospital is affiliated with Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, St. Louis College of Pharmacy, Millikin University, St. John’s College, and Washington University School of Medicine
  • St. Francis Hospital   in Litchfield, Illinois
  • St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital   in Effingham, Illinois
  • St. Joseph’s Hospital i in Highland, Illinois
  • St. Joseph’s Hospital  in Breese, Illinois
  • St. Elizabeth’s Hospital  in O’Fallon, Illinois, which is affiliated with Saint Louis University, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, Southwestern Illinois College, and Kaskaskia College
  • Holy Family Hospital in Greenville, Illinois
  • Good Shepherd Hospital  in Shelbyville, Illinois

After getting that phone call, DataBreaches checked ransomware group leak sites, but none had anything about any attack on the hospital or system.

The GreenBay Gazette subsequently reported that the websites, internet, phone and computer applications for Hospital Sisters Health System (HSHS) and Prevea Health’s websites have been down since Sunday afternoon. HSHS owns a 50 percent stake in Prevea.

While HSHS.org is still down, a statement on Prevea Health alerts patients to the situation:

HSHS and Prevea are experiencing a systemwide outage of clinical and administrative applications.

A statement from HSHS and Prevea Health:

HSHS hospitals and Prevea Health continue to work through our temporary system outage. Currently, access to our phone system is sporadic and MyChart and MyPrevea communications are temporarily unavailable.

HSHS and Prevea have well-established downtime policies and procedures when we experience technology outages and we are following those protocols and continuing to care for our patients with the same level of quality, safe and effective care.

DataBreaches will continue to monitor for updates to this situation.
