Kiri Gillespie reports that the Bay of Plenty District Health Board has fired an employee for snooping in 48 patients’ files and then casually discussing the cases with co-workers. Read more in the New Zealand Herald.
In related coverage, Phillipa Yalden reports that the employee is a 66-year-old woman who was employed at Tauranga Hospital and that it was a co-worker who sounded the alarm that led to the investigation. That employee is not satisfied with how long it took to deal with her concern:
“I wrote to the privacy commissioner, I wrote to the CEO Phil Cammish telling them what was going on and nothing was done.”
[BOP DHB general manager of governance and quality and privacy officer Gail Bingham] says the audit began as soon as she was made aware.
