In August 2022, Montenegro announced that they had been the victim of a cyberattack by Russian hackers. Days later, the Cuba ransomware group claimed responsibility for the attack that damaged much of the government’s digital infrastructure. A May 2023 news story on Montenegro’s struggle to recover noted that according to the Ministry of Public Administration, 17 information systems in 10 institutions had been infected, with 150 computers directly affected by the attack.
As a reminder of how long recovery can take if a government does not have adequate resources to prevent, defend against, and recover from cyberattacks that may be financially or politically motivated, Balkan Insights reports that Montenegro will be launching a new public data portal to replace the one that was damaged two years ago.
