Last Wednesday, The Stanley Works notified the New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office that on December 15, a corporate laptop was stolen at an unnamed airport. The laptop contained files with personal information of employees of The Stanley Works and its subsidiaries, including their names and Social Security numbers and some salary information.
According to notification letters sent to affected employees, the files were password-protected.
The letter, signed by Joseph Voelker VP, Human Resources, does not explain how the laptop happened to be stolen at the airport, nor how many individuals had their information stolen, nor why it took 6 weeks from the time of the theft for the company to start notifying those affected. The company did not respond to a request for additional information on the incident by the time of publication. The company’s profile indicates that it has 18,400 employees.
