Dutch police report:
Last week, the police arrested five young people on suspicion of phishing. On Tuesday 1 July, four minors aged 14 and 17 from Lelystad were arrested, and on Wednesday 2 July, a 21-year-old suspect from Lelystad was arrested.
The police in Flevoland started an investigation some time ago after receiving reports of phishing victims. Victims – all ABN AMRO customers – received registered letters with a step-by-step plan to confirm details to supposedly keep their bank account safe. This asked them to scan a QR code, after which victims were redirected to a ‘digital banking environment’. In reality, this was a phishing website. In this way, the suspects managed to retrieve the bank details of at least six victims. In the investigation, the police worked closely with, among others, the Electronic Crimes Task Force (ECTF), ABN AMRO and PostNL. This ultimately led to these suspects. During the four arrests on Tuesday, a search of the home was also carried out and items were seized for further investigation. The investigation team is continuing and does not rule out more arrests.
