Authorities are trying to determine how men in Beaumont, Texas, ended up with papers that had personal financial information of Wilkesboro-based Carolina West Wireless customers, said Wilkesboro Police Chief Robert Bowlin.
Bowlin said a Beaumont Police Department detective contacted Carolina West on Sept. 30 and said Beaumont police had found 121 documents related to Carolina West customers when they stopped and searched a vehicle.
“It was information that people give when they get a telephone service,” said Bowlin.“We’re not sure how they (the men in Texas) got it, but it’s Carolina West’s responsibility to notify customers whose data was found on these two people,” he said. Carolina West is working on this with federal authorities, said Bowlin.
