NY: Town officials investigate security breach

There are certain unwritten rules most people know. Look both ways before crossing the street. If you’re a child, don’t talk to strangers. And never give out your social security number.

It seems the latter may have unintentionally happened to roughly 50 Town of New Baltimore employees and the question now is what to do about it.

The information e-mailed to at least seven computers included that of full-time and part-time people, plannning board and ZBA members, court justices, clerks and highway department workers.

One employee, who wished to remain unidentified, said, “I don’t like how this has been handled. I am steamed that my name, my wages, my pension fund and other private information was sent to people who had no right to it.”

According to Byas, the issue started Tuesday, October 26, when a town resident, who had requested information about the town’s preliminary budget apparently received more than just the names, salaries and titles of town employees.

Included in the e-mail was pension fund information, social security numbers and other sensitive information.
