Robert Weisman reports:
Federal officials are investigating the theft of personal information of about 8,830 former and current members of a Tufts Health Plan insurance plan, including names, birth dates, and Social Security numbers but not medical, health, or financial information, the insurer said Thursday.
Tufts Health Plan, based in Watertown, said the victims were among those customers who had purchased Tufts Medicare Preferred policies, including supplemental Medicare coverage and a prescription drug plan. Overall, the Tufts Medicare Preferred plan has about 127,000 members.
In a statement, Tufts Health Plan said the theft “was not due to an electronic breach, IT system vulnerability or hacking.” But it did not explain how the information was stolen.
