Federal officials are investigating an identity theft scheme that has been draining the bank accounts of Kanawha Valley residents in recent weeks.
Officials are urging residents to vigilantly check their credit and bank statements to make sure they haven’t been hit by this latest scheme.
Ron Layton, resident agent in charge of the U.S. Secret Service in West Virginia, said Monday that his office is working with U.S. Attorney Booth Goodwin’s Identity Theft Initiative team.
“We are aware of the recent uptick in credit fraud,” Layton said. “It’s been over the course of the last couple of weeks that we’ve become aware of recent activity.”
