Austin, Texas-based Transcend Capital reports that a laptop stolen from their Dallas branch contained customers’ names, account numbers, and in some cases, Social Security numbers.
By letter dated November 11, Transcend notified the New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office that an employee breached policy by not ensuring that his work laptop was encrypted or locked when he stepped away from his desk for a minute on October 31.
Account numbers have been or will be changed for affected customers, and for those whose SSN was involved, free credit monitoring has been offered.
Since the incident, the firm has reminded employees of their policies and added locking cables to secure laptops to desks.
