This is the second relatively light sentence I’ve seen this week for identity-theft related cases. The first was a nurse in Colorado, now this one from Georgia. Caitlin Mullen reports:
A DeKalb man charged with identity theft and deceptive practices was sentenced Wednesday to 60 months of probation.
Edward McGee, 21, of the 1400 block of Twombly Road in DeKalb, pleaded guilty to identity theft and two counts of deceptive practice, Class 4 felonies punishable by up to three years in prison. He also pleaded guilty to two counts of driving while license suspended, a Class A misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in jail.
According to court documents, McGee admitted to taking personal identification information while he was working at a real estate company and giving it to Robert McKinney, who lives at the same address as McGee. Fraudulent checks were then created and made out to various people, and attempts to cash the checks were made at various financial institutions in the county.
