The Markle Foundation reports that a large majority of Americans are very concerned their health information is not adequately protected by federal law. People admit they have lied or skipped recommended testing to avoid having information in their records. They aren’t confident about privacy and security.
Electronic medical records can lead to improved health care by eliminating errors and duplication. But this concentrated information also brings the risk of exposure. In the areas of privacy, security and the right to control access to one’s personal health information, public policy has not caught up to technology.
