Timothy Bolger reports:
A Rockville Centre woman has admitted stealing 250 identities in 30 states, taking more than $75,000 from her victims and fraudulently requesting over $500,000 in New York State income tax refunds.
Susan Pemberton pleaded guilty Wednesday at Nassau County court to grand larceny, scheme to defraud, offering a false instrument for filing and identity theft.
Prosecutors said the 43-year-old woman and Cynthia Sibert, 23, of Roslyn, placed phony help wanted and apartment rental ads on Craigslist in 2010. Sibert pleaded guilty to charges related to her role in the scam last June.
Victims were sent employment and rental applications that supplied the duo with personal information they used to file the fraudulent tax returns. They also obtained bank loans and credit cards in their victims’ names.
