A laptop with unencrypted names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, and employee ID numbers of current and former employees was stolen from the Brooklyn, New York office of The New Teacher Project the weekend of July 27-28.
Notifications to those affected with offers of free credit monitoring are going out about now.
Of note, the letter says, “To our knowledge, the laptop did not include any credit card number(s), bank account, PIN, or other financial information.”
Maybe it’s just me, but I read “To our knowledge” to mean that they didn’t have a backup of the drive that they could check to be sure what was on it and what wasn’t. Is that how you read it?
TNTP is a national non-profit organization with a worthy goal. It’s a shame this happened and it’s a shame that they hadn’t used encryption. Although the laptop may have been stolen for the hardware, with SSN involved, better safe than sorry.
