South Carolina Health Insurance Pool reports breach after laptop stolen from independent auditor’s car (Update1)

Posted on December 28, 2013 by Dissent

Just what South Carolina needed – another agency breach.  Chris Meller writes:

…  the South Carolina Health Insurance Pool has begun notifying current and previous subscribers that their information has been leaked again.

According to a letter dated December 18th a laptop owned by DeLoach & Williamson, an independent auditor contracted by SCHIP, was stolen from an employee’s car on October 16, 2013.

The SCHIP investigation found that the laptop contained an unspecified number of subscriber records, including: Social Security Number, last name, first and middle initials, dates of service, and provider identification numbers.

Read more on ChrisMeller.com. Chris filed a FOI request on December 22nd to get more information on this breach, as there’s nothing on SCHIP’s web site, but the state’s Department of Insurance responded that they had no responsive records. FITSNews reports that they are also filing a FOI request.

Update:  Looks like 3,400 were affected.
