State Industrial Products employee info found in possession of tax refund fraudsters (Update 1)

Posted on January 30, 2014 by Dissent

idRADAR reports:

State Industrial Products (SIP) is notifying employees past and present that their personal information may have fallen into the hands of a criminal ring seeking to grab workers’ income tax refunds. It’s a new data breach that has serious implications because the IRS filing season opens in just 48 hours.

The FBI notified SIP of the data breach on January 23rd. “The FBI informed us…that unauthorized persons gained access to information about some current and former employees,” the breach notification letter stated. CEO Seth Uhrman wrote, “(Y)our name, like mine, was on that list.”

Update: The breach was also reported to the New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office (pdf).
