This really unacceptable, and for the prosecutor to suggest that the sentence was fair because there was no public safety risk totally minimizes the importance of citizens feeling a measure of confidence that state employees are not snooping in their files.

A former state employee who pleaded guilty to breaching thousands of driver’s license files while working at the Department of Natural Resources was sentenced Monday to two years’ probation.
John Hunt, 49, of Woodbury, entered an Alford plea in February to three counts filed in Ramsey County District Court: misconduct of a public employee, unauthorized computer access and unlawful use of private data. He originally faced eight counts.
