IN: Thieves may have taken medical records

Posted on May 19, 2011 by Dissent

Okay, here’s a disturbing news item from WISH-TV:

Speedway Police say a burglar broke into a storage barn behind the Comfort Dental Offices at 2955 North High School Road, stealing a bicycle and maybe even medical records of dental patients.

According to information from police, the intruder broke into the barn late Monday night.

Officers arrived on scene at approximately 9:35 a.m. on Tuesday. The officers spoke with the building owner who told them that the lock of the storage barn never closed correctly.

Furthermore, he said that the lock of the door could be completely removed from the door, allowing easy access to the facility.

The owner told police that the barn contained several years worth of medical records as well as miscellaneous items, including the bicycle.

Police say the owner had no intentions of reporting the stolen bicycle to the authorities. He reported the incident because he did not know if the patient information was stolen or not.

No one was injured or harmed in the incident and the intruder has not yet been identified.

The owner knowingly stored patient records in a barn with inadequate physical security?  Is the building owner the dentist or someone else? I am curious as to what HHS/OCR will do with this case if it comes to their attention. Depending on how many patients may have had their data stolen, we may never see this one on their breach tool, but I’ll watch for it.

A Google search on the address shows a number of dental practices associated with that address, so it’s not clear who the owner is with respect to this possible incident.  Comfort Dental Offices is an independently owned franchise, but their site does not list an office in Indiana.
