Northwestern Counseling & Support Services in St. Albans, Vermont notified some clients last month that a stolen petty cash lockbox that held itemized receipts with the clients’ Social Security Numbers went missing.
Okay, it happened, and the service duly notified those affected. But really, is it fair to put this on the clients:
Although the petty cash was likely the target, (not social security numbers), please monitor your bank account, credit and debit card statements over the next year or two, and immediately report suspicious activity to your bank or credit union.
So for two years, clients should monitor all of their accounts on a monthly basis because the service had a security breach? In my opinion, the service should have offered them free credit monitoring services.
