Posted on January 26, 2017 by Dissent

Ah, I knew we’d start seeing a lot more of these phishing for W-2 scams. Earlier today, it was a district in Tennessee. Now I learn that eight districts in Missouri that were hit, although it’s not yet clear whether it was the same phishing email/criminals or not. This scammer had files sent to a Comcast email address.

Taisha Walker reports:

An e-mail phishing scam hit the district Tuesday night.

Someone pretending to be the superintendent requested employees’ personal information including their W-2 forms.

The real Superintendent is now alerting staff to monitor their financial information.

 […]

The Odessa School District was one of eight district (sic) to receive that phishing scam – The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education says they believe Odessa is the only district to send the W-2’s as requested in the scam.
