Developing: Multiple NHS trusts across England disrupted by ransomware attack

Posted on May 12, 2017 by Dissent

Digital Health is reporting:

Multiple hospitals across England have been hit by a large-scale cyber attack on Friday afternoon, with trusts switching off systems.

NHS Digital confirmed to Digital Health News that it is aware of a “cyber security incident”.

Sources told Digital Health News that there was a major N3 cyber security issue on Friday with a number of trusts offline and some localities turning off their full networks, and social media reaction suggests it happened from around 1:30pm.

As I pointed out on Twitter earlier today, it’s not unheard of for a UK trust to cancel all appointments and redirect services as part of containing/responding to a ransomware incident. But what happens when there’s a widespread attack of ransomware across many or all trusts? This can definitely be a nightmare situation for healthcare.  Is this going to be one of those exceptions to the rule/advice about not paying ransom demands?
