Dwaipayan Ghosh reports:
Kolkata: A BTech engineer working in a Sector V firm was arrested by the Bidhannagar cyber fraud wing for allegedly cheating on the US-based clients of another city-based IT company of lakhs. The accused — Akhilesh Shaw (31) — is a resident of Golpark’s Panchanantala and was arrested last Friday.
The modus operandi — the accused steals data of the parent company and then cheat on its clients using that data — has become a major worry for IT bigwigs operating from Salt Lake. This is the third such incident since January.
Bidhannagar police say such gangs steal data and then either sell it off to another company or use the data for illegal purposes. Shaw recently joined his present company, Indux Logix India, in Sector V. “About a month ago, he met a few employees of his previous company and hatched the plan. We believe at least four others are involved in this cyber crime. On May 4, the Sector V firm, for which Shaw works, got whiff of the crime and reported the matter to police,” said an officer.
