CVS Caremark's Privacy Practices, Conflicts of Interest Subject of D.C. City Council Hearing

Posted on January 8, 2009 by Dissent

Received this press release by e-mail from Change to Win:

On Friday, Jan. 9 at 10:00 A.M., D.C. Councilmember David Catania will chair a hearing of the NAME to look into how CVS Caremark’s practices regarding patient privacy could be impacting D.C. consumers and other questionable practices by the retail drug giant.

The hearings come on the heels of a report released by Change to Win detailing historically questionable and possibly illegal conduct by CVS Caremark and its legacy companies, Alarmed About CVS Caremark. CVS Caremark is currently operating under three separate consent decrees with the U.S. Department of Justice and the District of Columbia plus dozens of states, and is the subject of two pending lawsuits alleging improper drug switching and fraud.

CVS dominates the retail drugstore market in the District with 52 stores (58% of the District’s retail drugstores), compared with one Walgreens and seven Rite-Aids in the District. CVS Caremark is now the country’s largest provider of prescription drug services and largest retail pharmacy chain.
