A former United Way employee, Luis Robert Altamirano, was sentenced today on charges of computer fraud. Altamarino to 18 months’ imprisonment, to be followed by three years of supervised release. In addition, the Court ordered him to pay more than $50,000 in restitution. Jeffery H. Sloman, Acting United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, and John V. Gillies, Special Agent in Charge, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Miami Field Office, announced the sentencing.
According to documents filed with the Court, Altamirano was a former employee of United Way of Miami-Dade (“UWMD”). He was employed as a computer specialist from July to December 2007. Approximately one year after he left UWMD’s employ, Altamirano accessed United Way’s network without authorization. He deleted numerous files from UWMD’s servers and disabled UWMD’s telephone voice mail system, which prevented callers from leaving messages for UWMD and prevented UWMD employees from accessing their voice mail accounts. Altamirano pled guilty to computer fraud on September 16, 2009.
