Bronx man who used social engineering to steal 176 dentists’ info sentenced.

Michael A. Roseboro, a/k/a “Mike Ross,” a/k/a “Michael Johnson,” a/k/a “Michael Smith,” was sentenced on November 25 to 116 months in prison for his participation in a massive identity-theft and credit card fraud scheme in which he targeted and stole the identities of at least 176 dentists. The sentencing was announced by Preet Bharara, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, and Ronald J. Verrochio, the Inspector-in-Charge of the New York Office of the United States Postal Inspection Service (“USPIS”).

Roseboro pleaded guilty on June 29, 2009 to one count of conspiracy to commit credit card fraud, one count of credit card fraud, and one count of aggravated identity theft.

According to the Complaint and the Superseding Indictment, as well as statements made in connection with
Roseboro’s guilty plea and sentencing, Roseboro was the architect of a massive credit card and identity theft scheme whereby he stole the identities of at least 176 dentists, and used the dentists’ credit cards to purchase diamonds and other luxury items from retail stores around the country. The fraudulent scheme caused losses to credit card companies and the merchants in the amount of $1,749,065. In furtherance of the scheme, over a nearly three-year period, Roseboro contacted dentists around the country, claiming to be a fraud investigator with Visa Security or Bank of America who was inquiring about potentially fraudulent charges on the dentists’ credit cards. In response to Roseboro’s questions, the dentists provided their personal identification information, including credit card and social security numbers.

In addition to the prison term, U.S. District Court Judge Victor Marrero sentenced Roseboro to three years of supervised release and ordered him to pay restitution in the amount of $1,749,065 to Bank of America, American Express, and the various merchants who suffered losses as a result of his fraudulent scheme.

Roseboro, 46, lived in Bronx, New York, until his arrest in 2008. His co-defendant, Kareem Holmes, 34, of the Bronx, New York, previously pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit credit card fraud and one count of credit card fraud and was sentenced on July 10, 2009, to 10 months in prison.
