As noted here and elsewhere, the number of breaches reported in the media and other sources declined in 2009 relative to 2008, but newly obtained data suggests that once again, there was much that we did not know.
During the period September 1 – December 31, 2009, 141 breach reports were received by the New York State Consumer Protection Board. Of these 141 incidents, 100 were not disclosed in any of the media sources scoured by this site nor by any of the other states that routinely publish breach notifications they receive.
The following is a summary of the 100 breaches reported to NYS from September 1 – December 31 2009 that we did not already know about, organized by sector. The number in each entry indicates the number of NYS residents affected, not the total number of individuals affected. Unfortunately, NYS’s summary does not specify the exact type of PII involved in each incident. On a positive note, there do not appear to be any huge breaches that we did not know about already.
