The U.S. Secret Service said it has busted a one-of-a-kind identity theft ring, and one of the suspects is also accused of trying to kill another member of the ring.
Eight suspects were indicted by a federal grand jury on Tuesday. The Secret Service said the suspects stole the identities of about 200 people. But Secret Service officials said their ultimate goal wasn’t money, but pills.
“The different twist is that this group was very organized in the sense of using identity theft as a means to get prescription drugs,” said Paul Johnson, with the U.S. Secret Service.
