I was reading some local coverage about recent card fraud in Macon, Georgia when I realized that one of the previous breach incidents they were describing didn’t seem familiar:
The recent cases in downtown Macon come on the heels of about 50 employees at Robins Air Force Base having their accounts hacked in August after using credit and debit cards on base.
Curious, I did a bit of searching and sure enough, there had been an incident that I seem to have missed. Here’s the statement posted on the Robins Air Force Base‘s web site on August 20:
Many Robins employees in the past week have reported being victims of credit card fraud.
Several transactions late last week at a few base locations, including the Base Restaurant, resulted in erroneous charges on several patrons’ credit and debit cards.
The Warner Robins Police Department and the Air Force Office of Special Investigations are investigating the reports, which involve charges being made on cards at locations around the world.
Meanwhile, 78th Force Support Squadron personnel and other agencies are working around the clock to remedy the situation.
Wendy Myers, industrial security specialist at Robins, advises everyone to check their bank accounts and credit card accounts regularly for the next few weeks to ensure no fraudulent charges have been made.
If such charges have been made, the financial institution involved will advise a course of action. Any suspicious account activity should be reported to local off-base law enforcement.
There was also media coverage of the incident at the time, so I really have no idea how I missed this one, but I’m putting myself in 10-minute timeout for it.
