Julie Steigerwald reports for KOLD in Tucson:
University Medical Center says three employees and one contracted nurse have been fired for inappropriately accessing confidential electronic medical records in violation of UMC policy.
This comes in the wake of several high-profile patients receiving treatment at UMC following the shooting at Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords’ congressional event Saturday, including Giffords. She is currently in critical condition at UMC after suffering a gunshot wound to the head.
In a statement, UMC says it “takes the privacy of all patients very seriously” and is “not aware of any confidential patient information being released publicly”. UMC also says all patients whose information was accessed have been notified.
It seems that these snooping incidents are all related to the shooting in Tucson, which means that UMC has been right on top of checking logs/access to address snooping because of the high profile of this case. Good for them!
