Posted on April 14, 2011 by Dissent

From NUI Galway’s web site:

This notice is related to a text which was sent by the University this week. If you received the text please read the message below as it explains the incident.

On March 30 th2011 the University was advised that a file containing student id number, name, NUI Galway email address and mobile phone number was accessed as a result of a security issue with the NUI Galway Clubs and Societies computer system. The file contained data relating to students (registered and pre-registered) in September 2008. We believe the file was accessed between September 2008 and December 2009.

No other personally identifiable information that you have supplied to the University was at risk.

The University is contacting all individuals whose details may have been accessed at the mobile phone number which was provided to the University in 2008 .

If you received the text then the mobile phone number at which you have received the text was provided to the University in 2008 as part of your application to study here.

For your security, we encourage you to be aware of common text/ email scams that ask for personal or sensitive information.

In line with Data Protection legislation the University has reported this incident to the Data Protection Commissioner.

We regret this has taken place and for any inconvenience this may have caused you. We take your privacy very seriously, and we will continue to work diligently to protect your personal information.

If you would like to get further information/advice on this matter please contact the Societies Offfce at 091 492852 or email
