MN: Allina fires 32 over privacy violations in Blaine mass overdose case

Posted on May 7, 2011 by Dissent

Sarah Horner reports the follow-up to a breach that I knew nothing about:

Thirty-two employees of Allina Hospitals and Clinics were fired yesterday for looking at medical records of patients involved in a recent mass overdose in Blaine without having any professional reason to do so, an Allina spokesman said.

Twenty-eight employees were let go from Unity Hospital in Fridley and four from Mercy Hospital in Coon Rapids for violating patient privacy, according to David Kanihan, a spokesman for Allina.

Eleven teens and young adults were taken to Unity and Mercy hospitals March 17 after overdosing on the synthetic hallucinogen 2C-E at a Blaine party. One of the partiers, 19-year-old Trevor Robinson, died after the overdose.

Employees are accused of looking up the patients’ records on the hospitals’ electronic medical systems with no “legitimate patient care reason to do so,” Kanihan said.
