Hackers claim attack on FBI partner organization, 1,000 compromised accounts

Posted on June 20, 2011 by Dissent

Stephen Dockery of Associated Press reports:

Internet hackers say they have compromised the security of more than 1,000 accounts at an FBI partner organization.

The online hacking collective Lulz Security says it attacked a local section of InfraGard, a partnership between the FBI and the private sector to share security information. Connecticut-based InfraGard’s website is down.

It would be nice to see some proof of compromise or get confirmation from InfraGard-CT. I note that I have not yet seen any follow-up to the hackers’ claims that they acquired 200,000 accounts’ information from Brinks. While I have no reason to disbelieve them, adding incidents to a blog or database without some confirmation or proof feels… wrong.

These “crackers” (I won’t insult honest hackers who work proactively to help companies upon request or as part of their IT security job) seem to thrive on publicity. I wonder what would happen if we started to ignore their claims. Their main thrust seems to cause major consumer concern about the security of databases. I agree that all companies should take time NOW to check the quality of their security and defenses against breaches of all kinds. This has to be a wake-up call. However, I hate all the stress this has put on the public.
