Like all drivers with a Minnesota license, Michelle knows the state has her personal information. She gave it when she got the license.
But when Michelle received a letter last month from the Department of Human Services she was shocked to learn that a state worker accessed her personal and private information without authority.

1,100 Minnesota drivers received the same letter. During a system audit, the Department of Public Safety learned that for nearly a year, two Department of Human Services workers accessed records from driver and vehicle services without permission. Their jobs were to do background studies on people working in the health and human services industry. Both had worked at DHS for a year.

The information included names, dates of birth, addresses, license status and photos – no financial data or social security numbers. DHS officials say all employee access to the database has stopped and won’t be reinstated until they develop a more controlled access system.
