Back in July, I blogged about pizza store chains being hacked. One of them was Extreme Pizza, who had received reports of card fraud from 16 of their west coast franchises after a POS hack in August 2010. Now they’re back in the news with reports of a more recent compromise affecting customers in Nebraska:
Next month, Extreme Pizza will celebrate its one-year anniversary in Omaha at 114th and Dodge. It will do so with a new way of taking credit cards.
Investigators say someone hacked into the system where cards are swiped next to the touch screen and sent over the internet. The thefts are believed to go back as far as September.

Extreme Pizza owner Lisa Gordon says any breach is horrible but wants customers to know that as soon as she learned of the problem — it was fixed by the vendor and the business moved credit card transactions to a different type of reader.

Looking at the comments under the story, a number of customers were affected and only learned that Extreme Pizza was the source of their problems from the news coverage, leading me to wonder whether Extreme Pizza took steps to notify customers or not. The Omaha Extreme Pizza franchise’s web site simply says,
WE ARE EXPERIENCING TEMPORARY TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES AT THE STORE AND CANNOT PROCESS YOUR ONLINE ORDERS IMMEDIATELY. WE HOPE TO HAVE EVERYTHING BACK UP AND RUNNING MOMENTARILY.
Well, that’s not very transparent, is it?
Extreme Pizza did not respond to an inquiry sent to them earlier today. If anyone has received a notification letter from them, please use the Comments section below to let me know.
I ordered several pizzas from Extreme Pizza using the credit card interface on their web site. Unfortunately I received anchovies and green peppers on 2 pizzas instead of pepperoni and green pepper, and boy that really makes me mad.
I think that the hackers had something to do with it, and the site is now substituting anchovies for everything. Not to mention my taco pizza didn’t have the disposable hot sauce packets, and it tasted like they baked it with the lettuce on. Doesn’t anyone understand that taco pizza must be baked, and then the lettuce and tomatoes are added as a garnish after it comes out. I mean who wants warm lettuce?
Hackers, that’s who.
