Cn: Rumor: Renren Suffers Data Breach (UPDATED with Renren’s denial of any breach_

Posted on December 23, 2011 by Dissent

Rumors continue to circulate that Chinese social networking site Renren has been compromised, but there’s no confirmation at this time. Here’s another report:

Passwords for 4.76 mln accounts with Chinese SNS site Renren have reportedly been leaked online. In response to the news, Renren has notified users said to be affected with instructions on how to change passwords.

Yesterday afternoon, Renren issued a statement through the company’s official microblog account recommending that its users immediately change their password if the same password has been used in accounts with the Chinese Software Developer Network (CSDN.net) or other sites which have recently suffered leaks of user account information. Renren said yesterday that it can’t confirm that information regarding its users has indeed been leaked, adding that the warning was issued only out of security considerations.

So far, I still see no confirmation of reported breaches involving DuoWan, 7k7k, and 178.com, although some data reportedly from DuoWan was included in an article I linked to yesterday. If anyone sees any proof of hack or confirmation on these reported breaches, please let me know.

Updated 12-26-11:  Renren denies the breach.
