NC: Deputies: Windstream employee stole ‘numerous’ customer accounts in fraud

Posted on January 27, 2012 by Dissent

Nathan Hardin reports:

A Mt. Pleasant man turned himself in this morning after authorities issued warrants for his arrest. Deputies said he stole “numerous” customer accounts for more than a year while he was working as a Windstream employee.

Authorities said Walter Darnell Austin, 45, used the financial information of Windstream internet customers to buy thousands of dollars in merchandise and had the goods delivered at vacant homes in Rowan and Cabarrus counties.

[…]

The records taken, Morris said, were from a Windstream retail store in Kannapolis. The records were paper documents believed to be from the mid- to late 1990s, before Windstream acquired CT?Communications in 2007.

Morris said Austin is no longer employed by Windstream. He was hired by CT?Communications in 1999 and was a network technician with Windstream prior to his arrest.
