Personal identifying information belonging to more than 800 veterans was contained in a laptop that was stolen two months ago, the Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center said Friday.
The 824 affected veterans have been notified and offered free credit monitoring for a year, according to a press release.

The laptop was the personal property of a former physician resident at the VA and contained the name, last four Social Security digits, discharge date and medical provider name of the veterans. At the time, he had a professional need for the information but violated VA policy by putting the information on his personal laptop before it was stolen March 30, said Alicia Miller, acting public affairs officer.
