Roughly 300 transcripts, some containing complete Social Security numbers, were accessible through a University of Virginia website on Tuesday morning due to an as-yet unspecified human error, university officials have confirmed.
The incident came to light when a student conducting a Google search for an image of himself found his transcript online.

The problem was limited to applicants to the [Summer Language Institute] and was likely the result of human error, rather than a systemic flaw or deliberate attack, Wood said.

And before you fume about UVa using SSN, note that they didn’t create the applications – these were submitted by other schools, some of which do include SSN.
