Now-former student arrested in the University of Nebraska hack

Leslie Reed reports an arrest in a hacking incident that affected the University of Nebraska and state college system;

A former computer science and math major at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln now faces a federal computer hacking charge from last spring’s breach of a key computer system serving both NU and the state college system.

Daniel Stratman, 22, of Omaha, has been charged in U.S. District Court with intentionally accessing a protected computer system and causing damage of at least $5,000.

Stratman’s computer was seized by UNL Police on May 25.

Read more on Omaha.com. There’s not much publicly available in the court documents as some are sealed and the defendant waived indictment. At this time, there’s no real explanation of what the defendant’s motive might have been.  Stratman was reportedly enrolled as a student in the spring semester, but is no longer enrolled.
